Living in Gough Street at the NoHo Neighbourhood

Gough Street – NoHo Neighbourhood

There are some streets that everyone knows about, every great city has them, written about, Instagrammed and photographed. They are shopping streets, art streets, food market streets and so on. Gough Street is one of these streets that constantly attracts a crowd, whether they are Hong Kong residents or visiting tourists, they find their way to Gough street, lured by recommended restaurants, famous and infamous guests that having eaten there before, such as the late and great Anthony Bourdain who wonderfully sniffed out the local street food of noodles beef and tomatoes on the corner of Gough and Mee Lun streets creating an instant sensation that continues today. They come to Gough Street for the homewares stores, selling quirky and unusual items and knickknacks to upscale designer couches and pieces of furniture. They come for fine dining and they line up for street food.

Gough Street has a special vibe that comes alive from the diverse mix of eateries and retail stores but most of all it’s because of the people that live in and around the area and those that come to visit. The traditional and colourful wet markets are right next door to local butchers, grocers, fruiterers, delicatessens and fresh flower stands all carrying out business in a bustling manner. There is a constant stream of carts being pulled and shoppers haggling with cash for the best price.

NOHO - Space and Residences

NoHo is an older inner-city suburb that is crowded with older-style buildings. The typical building has a shopfront at ground level and residences above, a common style that old Hong Kong is famous for. Dotted around are more modern residential properties and developments, but mostly this suburb is intact with the older Chinese buildings.

Apartments for sale in this area of Hong Kong are generally located in walk-ups (buildings with no lifts) that are commonly low-rise. They range from 5 to 10 floors, the tallest ones being 10 storeys. It generally takes more effort if you are on the top floor, but most of these buildings have a rooftop area that goes with the top floor apartments. These are highly prized by the younger professionals who like to entertain at home on the weekend with BBQ’s. Some of the rooftop terraces are equipped with a hot tub or cabana lounge with nice vistas of the surrounding neighbourhood.

Most of these apartments are individually owned therefore you will find a mix of renovated and un-renovated estates. Some have had incredible designer makeovers, taking out walls and creating huge loft-style or spacious open planned living spaces and larger bedrooms with walk-in robes. Generally, these older buildings have much higher ceilings, so it appears more spacious overall. These renovated apartments resemble luxury homes. Some have private terraces or balconies and a few have shared or common areas for all residents.

The Delights of Living Here

Residing in the NoHo neighbourhood is a delight; it is generally much quieter than its closest neighbor, SoHo, as there is little traffic passing through with cul de sacs and pedestrian-only streets. While you are free from loud bars in that area, it only takes 5 minutes to walk to the entertainment areas of Soho, LKF and Central. The beauty is that you live right on the fringe of everything, with so many choices for bars and restaurants, supermarkets, retail therapy, exercise gyms, nail bars, hairdressers with easy access to the MTR  and more. Walking through Sheung Wan which borders NoHo gives you art and antiques, and some very cool cafes and wine shops.

There is absolutely no need for a car when you live in Noho. For starters, the older-style buildings do not have car parks, and on the streets, there are limited places you may find a park. But because everything is in a walking distance. you can stay fit, save money, use taxis or the MTR when you need to get further and enjoy being right in the centre of everything in Hong Kong.
