Tai Po is a hotspot of interesting activities and delicious meals for those in the know. Located about 50 minutes from Central by MTR, it has become a popular weekend destination with plenty of activities and fun to be had. Home to endless dining options, over 40 bars and pubs, some of the city’s finest markets, beautiful greenery and clean water, the district holds onto a slice of old Hong Kong and makes a great destination for a relaxing weekend getaway or a laid-back night out.

Tai Po, is an area, in the New Territories of Hong Kong, referring to the vicinity of the traditional market towns, presently known as Tai Po Old Market. Both market towns were later turned into Tai Po New Town in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There are many expensive high-end private properties in the sparsely populated area surrounding Tai Po.

Tai Po Town is one of the very densely populated regions with 320,000 people having residences in town, and most high-rise apartments are necessary and mandatory. These high-rise apartments are located inside estates and ranging from low apartments in Tai Po Old Town to the new estates with 20-34 levels.

The features of the houses in Tai Po are village houses. As they are restricted to not more than 3 storeys and 27 feet in height with not more than 2100 square feet in total floor space, these homes are unlike other luxury homes for sale. There are also a few private housing developments in Tai Po area as detached and semi-detached houses which include communal recreational areas and entertainment facilities. The Beverly Hills can be one of the famous properties in the area which has units as large as 11000 square feet, and the development is considered as extreme high-end of the luxury property market and attracted by mainly wealthy residents.

Shopping malls

The new town of Tai Po now boasts exciting shopping malls and a variety of shops with the proximity lies with the focal point of local manufacturing and service industries. Outside the hustle and bustle downtown, the Tai Po Market, as well as villages in the new town, still retained their traditional look that one can find buildings of village architecture. And the famous attractions of the place include Man Mo Temple, Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees and Hong Kong Railway Museum.

Natural scenery

On top of the spectacular scenery, Tai Po district also offers popular destinations of great interest for geo-tourism and ecotourism. Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve, the Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve and Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden are also great outdoors for learning about Hong Kong’s natural environment. The harmonious blend of rural tranquillity and urban vibrancy.

The Ng Tung Chai Waterfalls are a sight to behold and a relatively easy trek for those who are looking for a light bramble. Try the Plover Cove hike from Wu Kau Tang to Tai Mei Tuk to work up a sexy summer sweat — the views are totally worth it. Tai Po hikes take you through small villages and bamboo groves, allowing for great Instagram photo opportunities to rack up those likes.

Take out-of-towners to Tai Po Market to experience a real taste of old Hong Kong. Tai Po Market has been a farmers’ trading post for generations, with fish and meat sold on the ground floor, vegetables and fruit on the first floor and traditional restaurants on the second floor serving fresh produce sourced from the floors below. The wet market is a real sight to be seen with a colourful array of fruits, vegetables, dried seafood and fresh soybean milk.

Food

There is no lack of flagship restaurants located in the heart of Soho but Tai Po eatery is more spacious, bright and an open front that makes it a perfect destination for people watching, incense wafting over from the temple makes this a truly calming country experience. Yau Lok Barbecue Restaurant, Chung Shing Thai Restaurant and King’s Belly are one of the famous restaurants in the area. 

Transportation

Transportation in Tai Po Town is much like any other place in Hong Kong. There are some buses that lead to the rest of Hong Kong such as the bus route 271 that goes from Fu Heng Estate in Tai Po Town to Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui and bus route 307 which goes from Central Tai Po Town towards the Central Ferry Piers via Central and Wan Chai of Victoria. There are also buses that lead directly to the airport such as A47X from Tai Po (Fu Heng) to Hong Kong Airport and E41 from Tai Po Centre (Tai Po Plaza and Tai Po Mega Mall) to Hong Kong International Airport within 90 minutes. You may also take the railway from the East Rail Line serving Tai Po Market Station and Tai Wo Station.
