Living in Princes Terrace in Mid Levels

Every now and then, you come across a street that both fascinates and charms you and you think to yourself “what would it be like to live here?”

Princes Terrace in the Mid-levels is one such street. A beautiful little pedestrian-only street that runs straight off the escalator approach. Lined with older low-rise residential apartment buildings, most of which date back to the 1940s, they follow the older style of Hong Kong buildings with small shops or restaurants at street level below, and residential apartments situated above. A notable exception is Nikken Heights which is a newer building with lifts and high rises. Because of the appeal of Princes Terrace, most of the buildings have been kept in good condition and are well maintained by their owners for people interested in apartments for sale or rent in Hong Kong.

The apartments inside these low rises vary as much as you could imagine, with some having had prized and acclaimed designers and architects perform a full transformation to make the most of the higher ceilings and larger proportions in these mostly “walk-up” buildings. Many have been featured in Vogue Living or Tattler, and there is constantly a list of potential tenants or purchasers lining up for when one of these prized gems becomes available. The less renovated or original condition apartments are harder to find, but when you do, this street is assured of always holding its own and appealing to a wide audience. Nikken Heights 10-12 Prince’s Terrace

Standing out amongst the low-rise apartment buildings is Nikken Heights. The 23 storey block was completed in 1989 much later than its fellow buildings and has 46 apartments. It was originally built as a 2-bedroom serviced apartments. These days the building has separate titles and the apartments are all owned individually. The newer owners have mostly renovated with different layouts of either 1 or 2 bedrooms opening up space with modern interiors. The saleable areas of the apartments range from 598 to 1142 sq ft. and they all come with a balcony or outside terrace.

1 Prince’s Terrace

Built in 1963, this is an older style 6 storey walk-up building. The ground floor is for commercial use and the upper floors are residential apartments. There is only one very spacious apartment on each floor and they range in size from 846-903 sq ft. of saleable area.

9 Prince’s Terrace

Built in 1945 with 10 spacious apartments, this is a 5 storey Chinese walk-up building with 2 apartments per floor. Many of the apartments have been well renovated and modernised. They range in size from one tiny commercial space to a uniform apartment size of 808 sq ft.

With the escalator or your feet as the best mode of transport, Princes Terrace is surrounded by restaurants and cafés, retail stores and galleries. This convenient location is right above the entertainment streets of SoHo, yet quietly far away enough to give Prince’s Terrace residents a peaceful night’s sleep. And even if you don’t end up living on this street, make sure you visit Princes Terrace and relax in one of the street’s outdoor cafés lapping up some sunshine or browse through one of the art or antique galleries to see what you can find.
